(this is from an Instagram post, featured here for an easier read)
A is for a flower… because everyone is beautiful in their own special way.
It’s been 10 years this summer since I put my very first drawing out there. I had a Blogger account and a Myspace in those days. I’ve worked on self initiated pieces, on my online Etsy shop, I’ve had a brick and mortar shop, done public speaking, run several different studios, exhibited, done many art markets, worked on big commercial commissions and since 2016 mostly on my picture books. In that decade I have produced so many illustrations that it would take more than a year to show a different one each day. Some I’m proud of, others less so, but all make up a decade of creative work and my entire experience as an illustrator and author. My style has gone through some changes and so have my colours, just like my life has.
Nowadays I work alone in my attic studio. I'm contracted till late 2024 to work on some fab book projects, but after many lockdowns and much isolation I do feel like I need a reset. I want to be excited and re-engage with my work and you as my creative community. Why else am I here? I’m not ready to leave Instagram behind and I can’t show you what I’m currently working on. Most of all I’m not willing to play the algorithm for followers and add another job to my already busy schedule. To be honest I haven’t felt like posting much for ages. This platform has come and will go like others have before, but while we are here I want to put down a little punctuation mark right now, after a decade, take a deep long breath and take count of what I have achieved and learned. For me and also for anyone that would like to see and hear. Featuring the good, the bad and the ugly :-)
I’ve decided to go from A to Z through the catalogue of my illustrations and see what I have to say about them and what I remember. Along the alphabet I would also like to talk about other topics like … ceramics, inspiration, materials and process etc.
If you are interested, stick around. I invite you to ask questions. I will put a comment box in my stories highlights where you can ask or suggest a topic and I will feature certain ones as a grid post and elaborate as much as I know on those. Luckily now I can turn the likes counter off too, so this will really just be about the art.
So much love x SD x
